A river table flips the idea around: instead of coating the wood, the resin itself becomes the feature, a winding, translucent “river” running between two pieces of wood.
That’s what an epoxy river table is. It uses the wood-prep and sanding skills you already have and adds one new challenge: bridging the gap between two slabs with a deep, colored epoxy pour that looks like water.
This isn’t a guide to eight-seat dining tables. It’s a beginner’s epoxy river table tutorial built around a small, manageable size — an entry table, sofa side table or small coffee table, roughly 32″–40″ (80–100 cm) long — so you can learn the physics, containment and color work on a piece that won’t wreck a weekend or a slab budget.

What Makes a River Table Different From a Flat Pour
If you’ve done a butcher block or serving tray, you know the rhythm: seal the wood, pour a flood coat, pop bubbles, wait. A river pour uses the same tools but changes the rules in four ways.

1. You’re bridging a gap, not coating a surface.
In a flat pour the wood supports the resin from underneath. In a river pour there’s no wood in the middle — you’re filling open space between two slabs (often book-matched live edges). The resin becomes a structural part of the table, not just a top coat.
2. It’s almost always a deep pour.
A flood coat is 1/8″ to 1/4″ thick. A river runs the full thickness of the wood — usually 1-1/2″ to 2″ on a small table, more on a dining slab. That’s deep-pour (casting) epoxy territory: resin formulated to cure slowly and release its heat over many hours. 3. You need a leak-proof form (a “dam”).
On a butcher block the wood is the boundary. In a river pour, resin fills a void — and it will find every seam, pinhole and imperfect corner on its way to your floor. Building a sealed form is the most important step. 4. Color is the point.
Most butcher block pours are clear, to show off the wood. On a river table the tinted resin is the star — Caribbean turquoise, deep ocean blue, emerald green. That means learning to tint, which brings its own pitfalls: cure problems from the wrong colorant, muddy color from overdoing it, a river that looks like plastic instead of water.
The good news: if you can flat-pour, you can learn this. You’re adding three skills — building a form, managing a deep pour’s heat, and color work — on top of a foundation you already have.
Materials and Tools
Here’s what you need for a beginner-scale wood and resin river table (small side or coffee table: roughly 32″–40″ long, 16″–20″ wide). Wood
Two book-matched or complementary slabs, 1-1/2″ to 2″ thick. Live-edge is traditional (the wavy edge becomes the riverbank), but two straight-cut boards with a deliberate gap work fine for learning. Buy dry, acclimated wood at 8–10% moisture — wet wood bubbles, warps and pulls away from the resin. Walnut, maple, cherry and oak all work. Avoid oily woods like teak and some rosewoods for a first table: their natural oils can stop epoxy bonding properly unless you wipe them down with acetone and seal them first.
Resin
Deep-pour epoxy resin (sold as “casting” or “river table” resin). Coating/tabletop resin isn’t made for 1″+ pours and will overheat and crack. Deep-pour formulas vary a lot in how thick each layer can be — from 1/2″ to 4″ — so read the label before you buy. How Much Resin Do You Need?
Resin is the biggest cost, so measure before you buy. Multiply the river’s length × average width × depth in inches, then divide by 231 to get gallons.
- Example: a 36″ river, averaging 2-1/2″ wide, in 1-3/4″ slabs = 36 × 2.5 × 1.75 = 157.5 cubic inches ÷ 231 ≈ 0.68 gallons (about 87 fl oz).
- Add roughly 15% for the seal coat, resin that soaks into the edges, and the bit left in the cups — call it about 0.8 gallons (100 fl oz).
- So a 51 oz “small” kit won’t cover it, and a 1.5-gallon kit will, with some left over for a test pour.
Live edges wander, so measure the gap in three or four places and average it. In metric: length × width × depth in centimeters ÷ 1,000 = liters.
Color
Mica powder (shimmery, gives that swirling “moving water” look), alcohol inks (transparent, glassy) or resin pigment paste (more opaque, easier to control). Form (Dam) and Assembly Materials
- Melamine-coated particle board for the base and walls — smooth, non-porous, and epoxy doesn’t grip it well, so it releases.
- 100% silicone caulk for sealing every seam. Acrylic or latex caulk can leak and may affect the cure.
- Sheathing tape (Tuck Tape) or packing tape to line the inside — optional, but it makes release even easier.
- Hot-melt glue, scrap blocks and bar clamps to hold the slabs down.
Tools

- Heat gun or torch for popping surface bubbles — the Wagner HT1000 heat gun is the budget classic. Keep it moving.
- Router with a flush-trim bit for cleaning up the edges (a Freud 1/2″ bearing flush-trim bit is a solid, inexpensive choice). A circular saw with a straight edge also works.
- Random orbital sander plus a sanding progression: 80 → 120 → 220 → 320 grit, and higher if you’re polishing the resin.
- Table legs. Pre-made 16″ hairpin legs are the simplest option for coffee-table height; choose 22″–28″ legs for a side or entry table. Attach them with 1/4″-20 threaded inserts rather than wood screws.
PPE
Nitrile gloves (resin can get through thin latex) — a box of 6 mil nitrile gloves lasts the whole project — plus safety glasses and a respirator with organic-vapor cartridges. You’ll also want a dust mask or the same respirator for sanding, because cured epoxy dust is an irritant. Work somewhere ventilated, ideally a garage with the door open. Step-by-Step: Building a Small River Table
We’re building a small, beginner-scale table: roughly 36″ long and 18″ wide (about 90 × 45 cm), with a 2″–3″ wide river between the slabs, at coffee-table or side-table height. It’s big enough to teach you every skill and small enough that a mistake costs some resin and a weekend, not a $500 slab and a month of work.
Step 1: Choose and Prep Your Wood
Start with two dry, flat slabs; plane or sand them flat if they’re rough-sawn. Bring wood that’s been stored in a damp garage or shed into your workspace for a week to acclimate. Brush a thin coat of epoxy onto every face that will touch the river, especially the live edges. Many makers use regular tabletop epoxy for this because it sets faster; follow your deep-pour resin’s label on how long to wait before the main pour.
Step 2: Build Your Pour Dam
This step decides whether you end up with a river table or a puddle on the floor. Cut a melamine base a few inches bigger than the tabletop, then screw melamine strips to it to make walls. Size the inside of the form close to the slabs — about 1/2″–1″ of extra room at each end for trimming — because every extra inch of empty space fills with resin you’re paying for. The walls should stand at least 1/2″ above the top of the wood.
Run a generous bead of 100% silicone caulk along every inside seam and smooth it with a gloved finger. Let the caulk fully cure (24 hours is ideal — uncured silicone can leave soft resin along the edges). Line the inside with sheathing tape if you like, then dry-fit the slabs. A 2″–3″ river is ideal for a first table; wider means more resin, more heat and more risk.
Step 3: Arrange and Secure the Wood
Place the slabs in the form show-side up at your chosen river width. Anchor them down — wood floats when resin flows under and around it. Use hot-melt glue on the bottom, screws driven up through the melamine into the underside of each slab, or clamps across scrap blocks. Then run a bead of caulk along the bottom edge where the wood meets the melamine so resin can’t creep underneath.
Step 4: Mix and Tint Your Deep-Pour Resin
Measure exactly to the label ratio (many deep-pour resins are 2:1 by volume, but some are 1:1 — never guess) and mix slowly for the full time on the label, scraping the sides and bottom. Unmixed resin stuck to the first container’s walls is what causes soft spots in a big pour.
Tint after the resin is fully mixed. Add color gradually — a pinch of mica, a drop of ink, a pea-sized dab of paste. You can always add more; you can’t take it out. Test a small puddle on a white plate, because resin looks much darker in the cup than it will spread out. Step 5: Pour in Layers (Lifts) — Not All at Once
Epoxy cures through an exothermic reaction — it makes heat as it hardens, and heat that can’t escape cracks, yellows or even smokes a deep pour. It’s the same physics covered in Casting Sculptures with Epoxy Resin.
So pour in lifts. Fill the first layer to between a third and half of the river’s depth, pouring slowly down a stir stick to limit bubbles. Pass a heat gun over the surface on low, 6–8 inches away, to pop bubbles. Then wait for the next-layer time on your label — it ranges from about 4 to 36 hours depending on the formula and room temperature. Many resins want the next layer while the last one is still slightly tacky, so the layers bond; if you miss that window, lightly sand before pouring again. Repeat until the resin sits level with, or just above, the wood. Add rocks, shells or other embeds between lifts so they don’t sink to the bottom.

Step 6: Let It Cure Fully Before Demolding
Deep-pour resin can be firm enough to demold in 24–72 hours, depending on the brand, but it isn’t fully cured — hard enough to route and sand cleanly — until later, often around a week. Rush it and the resin gums up sandpaper or dents under the router. Check your label’s full-cure time, keep the room at a steady temperature in the label’s range (the cooler end is safer for thick pours), and cover the table with a cardboard box to keep dust off. Step 7: Trim, Sand, Finish and Attach Legs
- Remove the form. Unscrew the walls and pry the table off the base; melamine and tape release easily.
- Trim the edges. Square up the ends with a circular saw and straight edge, or clean the sides with a router and flush-trim bit. Wear your respirator and eye protection — epoxy dust is an irritant.
- Flatten and sand. Start at 80 grit to level any difference between the resin and the wood, then work through 120 → 220 → 320. Keep the sander moving; staying in one spot heats and softens resin.
- Finish it. Choose one: (a) a hard-wax oil or polyurethane over a 320-grit surface for a satin look — the easiest route; (b) a final flood coat of tabletop epoxy over a 220-grit surface for a glass-like finish (the same technique as the butcher block guide); or (c) wet-sand the whole top up through 400 → 800 → 1500 → 2000 grit and buff with polishing compound.
- Attach the legs. Install threaded inserts into the wood on the underside, not the resin river (resin can crack around fasteners under load), then bolt the legs on.
Common Beginner Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)
These four failures ruin more first river tables than anything else, roughly in order of how often they happen.
Mistake #1: A Leaking Pour Dam
The #1 first-timer failure. Thin resin finds every gap you didn’t caulk, and by the time you spot the drip, part of your river is on the floor.
Fix: Caulk every seam, let the caulk fully cure, and inspect the form with a flashlight before you mix anything. For extra insurance, test the dam with water and let it dry completely before pouring. Over-building the dam is never wasted time — and put plastic sheeting under the form, just in case.
Mistake #2: Pouring Too Deep in One Go (Heat Cracking)
A 2″-deep pour of coating resin in a confined gap can get hot enough to crack, yellow, smoke or foam — the failure described in Common Resin Problems.
Fix: Use real deep-pour resin, not tabletop resin, and pour in lifts no thicker than the label allows. Keep the workspace at room temperature, not a hot summer garage. If a pour starts smoking, get people out of the area, ventilate, and don’t breathe the fumes — a runaway reaction is a safety issue, not just a wasted pour.
Mistake #3: Using the Wrong Colorant (Cure Inhibition)
Acrylic craft paint, oil paint, food coloring and filler-heavy pigments can stop resin curing properly, leaving a tacky river that never hardens.
Fix: Use mica powder, alcohol ink or pigment paste sold for epoxy. When in doubt, use the same brand as your resin, and do a small test pour with your color 24 hours before the main pour.
Mistake #4: Skipping the Wood Seal Coat
Raw wood is full of air. When liquid resin hits unsealed wood, that air bleeds out of the grain for hours, leaving lines of tiny bubbles along the river’s edges that you can’t pop.
Fix: Seal every surface that will touch the river with a thin epoxy coat first — especially the live edges — and let it set before the deep pour. Every time.

How deep can you pour a river table in one go?
It depends on the resin. Coating/tabletop resin is made for about 1/8″–1/4″ per coat.
