The 4 Stages of Curing (and What You Can Do at Each One)

“Dry” and “cured” are not the same thing. A surface can feel dry to a fingertip while the chemistry underneath is still working, and it keeps working for days after the resin stops looking wet. Knowing which stage your piece is in tells you what is safe to do and what will leave a permanent mark.

Stage 1: Working time (pot life)

This is the window after mixing when the resin is still fluid enough to pour and shape, usually 30–45 minutes for craft epoxy and up to 100 minutes for deep-pour. Everything creative happens here: pouring, adding color, placing embeds, tilting the mold to fill fine detail, and popping bubbles with a torch or heat gun. Gloves on and a window open, as always.

The clock starts the moment resin and hardener meet, not when you finish stirring. Mixing a big batch or working in a warm room shortens it, so have your molds, colors and embeds laid out before you open the bottles. When the resin starts to thicken and pull like honey, working time is over.

Stage 2: Gel stage

Somewhere around the end of pot life the resin turns from a liquid into a soft, rubbery gel. This is the stage that fools beginners. It looks set, and it might even feel firm at the edge, but it is nowhere near cured.

Do not touch it, tilt it, or torch it. A fingertip leaves a permanent print, a nudge to the mold makes the surface slump to one side, and a torch pass now creates craters instead of popping bubbles, because the surface can no longer flow back and self-level. If you spot a bubble at this stage, let it go. It is far easier to sand and recoat later than to fix a dented gel.

Stage 3: Tack-free (touch-dry)

For most epoxy this arrives at 12–24 hours. The surface no longer feels sticky, and you can carefully move the piece, cover it, or pour a second coat. Many coating resins have a recoat window in the first day or two when a fresh layer bonds chemically without sanding, so this is the time for a flood coat or the next layer in a mold.

What you should not do yet: stack pieces on top of each other, demold anything thick, or sand. The piece is still soft below the skin, and the edges of a thick cast will bend or tear if you pull it out of a silicone mold now.

Stage 4: Full cure

What Makes Resin Cure Faster or Slower

Temperature

Temperature is the biggest lever you have. Epoxy cures best at 70–80°F (21–27°C). Below about 65°F (18°C) the reaction slows dramatically, and in a cold garage it can stall altogether, leaving a piece that is still soft after a week.

Layer thickness matters because the light has to reach all the way through, and opaque colorants block it, so anything heavily pigmented needs to be cured in thinner layers. Can You Speed Up Resin Curing?

Yes, within limits. You cannot turn a three-day cure into a three-hour one, but you can shave off hours and make sure it cures properly. Here is what helps.

  • Pour thinner layers. Thin layers cure through more evenly, and you can often recoat within 24 hours rather than waiting for a thick pour to finish.

Now the things that look like shortcuts and are not.

How to Tell When Resin Is Fully Cured

Cure times are a guide, but the piece itself gives the final answer. Run these checks before you demold or sand anything.

  • The fingernail test. Press a fingernail firmly into an inconspicuous edge. Fully cured resin takes no mark at all. If it dents, wait another day.
  • The tap test. Tap the surface with the back of a fingernail. Cured resin gives a clear, hard click, like tapping glass. A dull thud means it is still soft underneath.
  • No tack. Rest a gloved fingertip on the surface. It should feel slick and slightly cool, with no drag or stickiness.

What to Do While Your Resin Cures

The first 24 hours are where good pours get ruined, and it is almost always the crafter, not the resin. Here is what to do instead of poking it.

  • Don’t touch it. This is the number one way beginners spoil a piece. No test pokes, no checking the corner, no picking up the mold to look underneath.
  • Cover it. Turn a cardboard box or a plastic tote over the piece. It keeps dust, lint and pet hair off a surface that will grab anything that lands on it.
  • Clean your tools now. Wipe cups, stir sticks and the mixing surface with isopropyl alcohol while the leftover resin is still liquid. Once it cures, the only option is peeling. Keep your gloves on for this.
  • Do one last bubble check at the 15-minute mark. Look across the surface at eye level, give any stragglers a quick pass with the torch or heat gun, then leave it alone for good.
  • Keep the temperature steady overnight. A room that drops 15°F (8°C) after midnight slows the cure and can leave a piece tacky in the morning. Close the window and leave the heat on.
